About Me
My name is Rajiv Chopra. I am a photographer, educator, and storyteller specializing in street, travel, and landscape/nature photography. In addition, I do portrait photography, where my specialty is in natural light portraiture and headshots. I am based in the National Capital Region of Delhi, India.
I started photography in 1983 with my Olympus Om-2n camera. Companies did not pay graduates well those days, even people like me who graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology! I could not afford to travel or buy color film, so I started street photography with black & white photography. This early choice has been significant, and even today, my brain works better in black & white than in color.
Film is costly to buy and develop; at the turn of the century, I switched to digital cameras. My first digital camera is the Nikon D70, which I still own. I also retain my Nikon D200, which I use for digital pinhole photography.
My cameras of choice now are the Nikon D810 for portrait and landscape work; and the Fujifilm X-T4 and Fujifilm X100 V for street and travel photography.
My Approach
I adopted a documentary approach to photography when I was young, and I still use this approach for some of my work. However, you grow as a photographer when you continue to push the boundaries of your work. A photograph must be simple, and it is critical not to make your images complicated.
I have become convinced of the importance of storytelling, and this is the foundation of my approach to photography. Whether I choose to edit an image in a straight manner; create a vintage look; or abstract, the story remains at the heart of my images.
Coaching
I coach beginners and help them advance on their photography journey.
