Don’t Do This!

You Will Find Images Everywhere

You can find beautiful images everywhere. Sometimes you get so excited by the image-making opportunities you may take a few risks.

If you look at this image, you will notice the car in front and that the pattern created by the water makes it appear abstract. When I edited the image in Lightroom on my phone, I made it much darker. I applied an editing preset to do this. I have placed two images at the top of this post. While they are not the same image, the photos’ color scheme and overall mood will give you a sense of what you can do with a few tweaks.

The Rainy Day

I remember the day well: it was wet, cloudy, and windy. In Delhi, this implies that the traffic is going to be awful. People in Delhi do not know how to handle even the lightest rain. Terror grips their hearts, and their driving skills slide from bad to terrible.

I drove from Gurgaon to Delhi. The drive, which should have taken one hour, took almost three. I experienced many minutes when the car was stationary, and the only entertainment came from the sound of the rain pounding on the car’s roof. I tried to discern some musical patterns in the raindrops but failed.

Then, when I felt the traffic had doomed me to frustration and a long, boring drive, I saw the abstract patterns forming on my windscreen. I want to point out that the abstract patterns appeared when I switched the wipers off.

Be Safe

It is risky to take a photograph when you are driving a car, and I do not recommend anyone try this. I wanted the images but did not want to land in a hospital with broken bones. Between breaks, I set the display off mode to thirty minutes and kept the phone in shooting mode.

Then, whenever I sensed the traffic would be stationary for more than a few minutes, I picked my phone up and took these photos. I did not edit them while driving the car. Never do this: you will die or land in the hospital. No image is worth the risk.

That day was exceptional. I am aware of my phone and camera settings; I know what to do in the least time. I am clear: I would have forgone the opportunity to take the photographs if I sensed I was putting myself at risk.

You can and will find beautiful images everywhere. Do not risk your life or limb for the sake of an image.
